【学長メッセージ】令和８年熊本地震に係る本学の状況について

令和8年7月28日に発生した令和8年熊本地震により、尊い命を失われた方々に深く哀悼の意を表します。また、負傷された方、被災された方、そのご家族および関係の皆様に心よりお見舞い申し上げます。

本学では、発災直後に災害対策本部を設置し、学生等・教職員の安否確認と建物等の被害状況の把握に努めてまいりました。

本学においては、一部の施設や研究機器に被害が生じていますが、このたび大学施設の健全性を確認し、本日8月3日（月）より授業を再開いたしました。また、病院につきましても通常の診療体制に戻しており、少しずつ落ち着きを取り戻しております。

なお、学生等・教職員の人命に係る被害も確認されておりません。

被災直後から全国の国立大学をはじめ、各方面からのご支援や温かい励ましのお言葉を多数いただきましたこと、教職員を代表して心より感謝申し上げます。

現在も余震が続いておりますが、引き続き関係機関と連携し、復旧および支援に向けて全力で取り組んでまいります。

[Message from the President]

Current Status of Kumamoto University Following the Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake

On behalf of Kumamoto University, I extend my deepest condolences to those who lost their lives in the Reiwa 8 Kumamoto Earthquake that occurred on July 28, 2026. I also extend my heartfelt sympathies to all who were injured or otherwise affected by this disaster, as well as to their families and loved ones.

Immediately following the earthquake, Kumamoto University established a Disaster Response Headquarters and undertook comprehensive efforts to confirm the safety of our students, faculty, and staff, while also assessing the condition of our campuses and facilities.

Although some of our facilities and research equipment sustained damage, thorough inspections have confirmed the structural integrity of our university buildings. Accordingly, we resumed classes today, Monday, August 3. Kumamoto University Hospital has also resumed normal medical services and is gradually returning to normal operations.

Importantly, we are relieved to report that no fatalities or serious injuries involving our students, faculty, or staff have been confirmed.

Since the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, we have received an overwhelming number of messages of support and encouragement from national universities across Japan, as well as from our partners worldwide. On behalf of the entire Kumamoto University community, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your kindness, encouragement, and solidarity during this difficult time.

While aftershocks continue, we remain committed to working closely with the relevant authorities and organizations to ensure a full recovery and to provide all necessary support to our university community.
