  • Evacuation Information

An “Evacuation Order” or “Emergency Safety Measures” is issued for Chuo Ward, Kumamoto City.

Class Cancellation due to Evacuation Information, etc.

If any of the applicable disaster-related weather information or evacuation information is issued for Kumamoto City, classes shall be cancelled in accordance with the following provisions.

If such information is issued after a class has begun, the class shall, in principle, continue. However, the class may be cancelled immediately if necessary to ensure student safety.

Table(En202606)

Even in the case that the order is issued after classes have started, classes may be held from the next period onward if the dean and others deem it appropriate to keep students in the facility to maintain their safety when leaving the university.

Handling of students who are tardy or absent

In the following cases, students will not be considered late or absent (including leaving class early; the same applies hereinafter), provided they notify the university accordingly. Students should not put themselves at risk by attempting to come to campus and should notify the instructor in charge of their class instead.

(1) When safety is a priority

If a student is unavoidably late for or absent from a class because their safety while travelling to or from the university cannot be ensured due to circumstances such as the issuance of disaster-related weather information or evacuation information at Alert Level 4 or higher for the student’s place of residence, commuting route, or other relevant areas, even when no applicable disaster-related information has been issued for Kumamoto City.

(2) When public transportation is suspended or affected by other factors

When classes are held during adverse weather conditions, regardless of whether disaster-related weather information or evacuation information has been issued, and a student is unavoidably late for or absent from a class due to disruptions such as the suspension of public transportation.

For information on the appropriate actions to take based on disaster-related weather information, please refer to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s website, “Correspondence Between Disaster-Related Weather Information and Alert Levels.”

How to inform students and faculty members of class cancellations

Students, faculty and staff will be notified of the cancellation of classes via the Kumamoto University website and other means.

However, in the absence of such notification, students should check the latest information from the JMA, Kumamoto City Disaster Prevention Information Portal, etc., and decide for themselves whether or not classes will be cancelled based on the above "Measures to be taken when classes are cancelled due to evacuation information, etc." and prioritize safety in their own actions, taking into consideration "Treatment of students who are late or absent".

In the event that the cancellation is announced after classes have started, the dean or other appropriate person will make the decision to hold classes from the next period onward, and each faculty or department will make this known to all students.

 Educational Practicum, etc.

For educational training, hospital training, etc., students should follow the instructions of their respective training sites.

Joint Courses in Joint Educational Programs

The handling of joint courses in a joint educational program shall be discussed by the relevant faculties and other academic units of the constituent universities and separately determined by the head of each such faculty or academic unit.
