Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences
 |
The Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences was reformed in April 2003 by partially integrating the teaching staff of the Institute of Molecular Embryology and Genetics and the Institute of Resource Development and Analysis. This followed the foundation of the Faculty of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, which was formed by combining medical sciences and pharmaceutical sciences. Graduate school students belong to the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and are taught by staff members from the Faculty of Medical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Institute of Molecular Embryology and Genetics, the Institute of Resource Development and Analysis, and Kumamoto University Medical School Hospital. By taking advantage of the particular strengths of each faculty member, a great number of programs are provided that have faculty members from the pharmaceutical sciences and medical fields work in close cooperation with each other to give special lectures in the following areas: human anatomy and biodynamics, biophysics, and logical diagnostics. In the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, education is based on the basic pharmaceutical knowledge accumulated through undergraduate studies.
The school aims to cultivate pharmaceutical researchers and advanced pharmaceutical specialists that can be independent in thought and provide able leadership in a wide variety of fields including bioscience research, the creation of medical products, and clinical, environmental and public health administration.

Medicinal Plant Garden
Cultivating roughly 1,000 varieties of medicinal plants in the specimen garden and tree garden (3,100㎡), the Medical Plant Garden contributes to education in Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition, the garden hosts cultivation of medicinal plants for use in studies and as seedling in the cultivation farm (3,700㎡). The lab is devoted to elucidation and research projects involving physiologically active material from medicinal plants, genetic maintenance of medicinal plants, acquisition of medicinal plants, and cultivation of medicinal plants. The Garden also provides seminars about Chinese and Kampo medicine and medicinal plants for the general public and students.
