Kumamoto University has been promoting the establishment of overseas offices in response to the globalization of the university’s educational and research activities.
In October 2007, the university opened its first overseas office in Shanghai, China and employed a full-time Chinese employee to act as international relations coordinator. This coordinator will handle various projects in cooperation with the International Affairs Section of the university in Kumamoto, Japan, including cultivating potential Chinese students for the university, expanding and strengthening academic relationships with partner universities and institutions in China, promoting collaboration with industries and government offices in China, building networks between Japanese and Chinese alumni in China, and adopting a serious public relations stance in China.
Furthermore, the university has finalized plans for its second overseas office, in Daejeon, Korea.
The new office is to be located within the campus of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and will act as the university’s Korean Office to promote its research collaboration base with KAIST. Kumamoto University and KAIST will have a joint symposium at KAIST in September 2008 and will conduct an opening ceremony.
