“The International Presidential Forum ～The 7th Kumamoto University Forum～ was held at Kumamoto University on October 31st.
“The Kumamoto University Forum” which has been held in a variety of locations both in and out of Japan every year since 2003. Main purpose is to broaden the awareness of its superior educational research conducted at Kumamoto University. Coinciding with Kumamoto University’s 60th anniversary of its establishment, the International Presidential Forum brings together the presidents and the vice presidents from 26 partner institutions located in 11 different countries.
In the morning session, “The International Presidential Meeting” took place, including presentations by the 7 partner universities followed by a brief introduction on their cooperation schemes on international educational research. The session provided the opportunity to exchange opinions and detailed perspectives on collaborative research as well as on the formation of collaborative human resources development programs.
Lou Hongxiang, the Vice President of Shandong University attended “The International Presidential Meeting”. He commented on the forum’s outcome by saying: “various institutional partners’ participation enables joint cooperation to overcome the difficulties we face in globalization, and academic evolution can also be expected. One of the results is to build-up a friendship among universities.”
In the afternoon session, approximately 170 people were present titled “Memorial Lectures”. The target participants included staff members from universities and colleges, as well as associations of international exchange in Kumamoto Prefecture, local citizens and officials from Kumamoto University.
The results of the morning session, the “International Presidential Meeting”, were reported, and 4 partner universities presented their activities on enhancement of internationalization.
In a presentation made by Professor Hiyama, Dean of the Graduate School of Science and Technology of Kumamoto University, a general description about an international strategy and the distinctive effort made by Kumamoto University was explained as well as the advantages of Kumamoto’s appeal as a beautiful and competitive destination for students and researchers from overseas.
Kumamoto University places the promotion of internationalization as an issue of great importance for the university as a whole, following an active policy on the development of international exchange projects.
Professor Taniguchi, President of Kumamoto University commented on the possibility of international cooperation of educational research. “Future stages for students are not confined to Japan only. If they have somewhere in the world to work actively, it is good to have friends who have learned with at the place. In order for them to broaden their possibilities, building a learning-together environment for students of different cultures and backgrounds is essential”
He also highlighted that understanding is necessary to solve issues and problems that may arise in each countries through the provision of economic assistance, and the use of different languages and cultures when receiving foreign students.
