Liaison Office Opened at Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology
First Joint Symposium Held at the Same Time

Kumamoto University established its second foreign liaison office, the Kumamoto University KAIST Office, in the Biomedical Research Center (BMRC) at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST, Daejeon Metropolitan City), which has an academic exchange agreement with Kumamoto University. The September 9th opening ceremony was attended by President Tatsuro Sakimoto, Vice-President Nobuo Sakaguchi and 19 others, including President Suh Nam-Pyo, Vice-President Kim Sang-Soo, and 10 people from KAIST.
With the opening of the office seen as a turning point, the first annual joint symposium was launched on the same day. A total of 7 people presented their research. Four of them, Professor Tetsuya Taga, Professor Minetaro Ogawa, Researcher Nobuaki Shiraki, and Researcher Yukako Uchiyama, came from the Institute of Molecular Embryology and Genetics at Kumamoto University, which promotes a program that has been continuously adopted as a 21st Century COE Program and Global COE Program. Three more young and advanced researchers came from the Biomedical Research Center at KAIST. They presented their research in the field of life science, and joined a lively question and answer session with the audience of 70 or 80, including mostly students and researchers from KAIST. After the symposium, staff members with related duties from both universities exchanged their opinions concerning next year’s symposium and future research exchanges. They also confirmed that the symposium would be held at Kumamoto University next year.
In addition to this, the Conference for University Leaders in KAIST was held in Seoul on the previous day, September 8th, and hosted by the President of KAIST for the presidents of 30 universities from around the world. As the president of Kumamoto University, President Sakimoto delivered a presentation on the “Global Mobility of Teachers”
KAIST, a national university established by the Korean Ministry of Science and Technology, has received high marks from Seoul National University and Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in the engineering and technology field. It was ranked 48th for engineering and technology in the 2007 THES-QS World University Rankings, and ranked number one in Korea.
