First-ever exchange agreements have been concluded with two universities in China: Guangxi Normal University and Tongji University
Kumamoto University concluded an Agreement on Academic Exchange and an Agreement on Student Exchange with Guangxi Normal University (located in Guilin, China) on March 3, 2005.
The university also concluded an Agreement on Student Exchange with Tongji University (located in Shanghai, China) on April 8, 2005.
Until now, many exchange agreements at the department level with universities in China have been concluded, but this is the first time that an exchange agreement has been concluded with an entire university.
Based on the sister-cities relationship that Guilin and Kumamoto City have, a department exchange agreement was concluded between Kumamoto University's Faculty of Education and Guangxi Normal University's College of Pedagogics in 1999.
Since that time, faculty and students have been engaging in international exchange. To mark the 25th anniversary celebrating the signing of the friendship agreement between the two cities, and due to the positive results seen in the past five years at the department level,
the universities decided to conclude an university Agreement on Academic Exchange as well as an Agreement on Student Exchange with each other.
The Agreement on Student Exchange with Tongji University was signed after Kumamoto University gladly accepted an offer from Tongji University to conclude a student exchange agreement between the two universities.
It will mainly be focused on a short-term (approximately one year) study abroad exchange program aimed at undergraduates.
Based on these agreements, Kumamoto University will be able to accept students from both universities in China, while at the same time it will also become possible for Kumamoto University to send students to study at either of the two cities in China,
both which have different characteristics. As a result, Kumamoto University will be able to provide its students with a wide range of invaluable opportunities to be able learn about modern China, a country which is evolving on a daily basis.
